Junior Software Engineer

This role involves working in an agile software engineering team across a number of products including transactional web sites and a high capacity, high availability, ecommerce web application that supports global online activities. Combining technical analytical skills, domain and product knowledge with effective planning, you will participate in the development of full stack components of web applications that drive online web properties.

The responsibilities of the Junior Software Engineer will cover the complete lifecycle of development activities from planning to delivery, ensuring efficiency and quality output through object-oriented design principles and TDD methodologies. Out of hours working maybe required from time to time, or required to provide on-call duty, on a rota basis.

Responsibilities

  • To actively participate in the development of a self-managing cross functional team where every member of a release believes that they are “all in this together” so that each team member can work as effective and efficiently as possible and take a shared responsibility in the delivery of a release
  • Ensure understanding and ability to implement the technical direction agreed by the team
  • To analyse project documentation and solution designs to gain sufficient understanding to enable planning, and contribute to technical documentation where required
  • To participate in the agile planning process providing estimations of size so that work may be planned and prioritized accurately
  • Develop implementations that match requirements (using TDD and design principles where applicable) and ensure deliverables meet acceptance criteria
  • To continuously improve your skills and knowledge through self-learning, keeping abreast of the latest ideas and technology, consistently providing value and improving your ability to do your work
  • Actively partake in efficiently executing any actions agreed by your team or in the department as a whole, so that your team is continuously improving their working practices and processes
  • Innovative problem-solver who can generate workable solutions to resolve issues and meet product requirements

Skills / Knowledge / Experience

  • Educated to degree level.
  • Fluent in Swedish and English with good business communication skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of full-stack web application development
  • Demonstrable experience of developing data driven applications, including database design and SQL
  • Demonstrable knowledge of basic Design Principles and Practices
  • Demonstrable experience of writing unit tests (possibly within a TDD environment)
  • Demonstrable experience of working with source control
  • Demonstrable experience of working with modern client-side web technologies, including HTML5, CSS3 and modern JavaScript
  • Exposure to Agile methodologies (particularly Scrum, XP and/or Lean)

Desired Experience:

  • Exposure to Test First practices, Continuous Integration and IoC/Dependency Injection.
  • Experience with Behaviour Driven Development.
  • Experience of development with LAMP platform and MVC pattern, with PHP v5 or greater.
  • Experience with distributed version control systems (Git/Mercurial)
  • Experience with CSS pre-processors (Sass/Less/Stylus).
  • Experience of modern JS frameworks (React/Angular/Backbone).
  • Experience of Design Principles and Practices (SOLID, GoF, PoEAA, REST)
